The Continence Advisory Service of WA Inc was established in the late 1980s and was managed by the Continence Foundation of Australia (Western Australian branch). The original focus was to provide a Continence Helpline.
Since 1994 the organisation has been funded by the Home and Community Care Program (HACC) to provide information, education and advice on bladder and bowel health issues to people with, or at risk of developing bladder and bowel health issues. Services are also provided for carers, support workers and health care professionals, along with organisations and community groups in the health, community care and disability sectors who provide continence care in the community.
In 2003 the organisation became incorporated independently and established its own governing Board of Directors. Retired paediatric surgeon Gordon Baron-Hay was the founding President and remained in this position until he retired in 2010.
From 2013 – 2017 the Continence Advisory Service partnered with Therapy Focus to develop and manage PEBBLES. This was a new service that was originally targeted at children with disabilities who had toilet training or bladder and/or bowel health issues. The service has now expanded to include services for adult clients and operates throughout Western Australia.
The organisation underwent a name change in 2016 to Bladder and Bowel Health Australia. The new name makes it easier for clients to differentiate us from other continence services and subsidy schemes. Our new name also represents the breadth of issues we assist clients with, rather than being limited to incontinence.
